KONAMI PES 14 - REVIEW

Hoping for a competition with FIFA 14 , Konami has released their latest edition of Pro Evolution Soccer..........."PES 14".But posing a competition to FIFA will not be an easy task .So let me give you a review of the new PES 14 , and its upto you to decide which one is better 'FIFA 14' or 'PES 14'........So let's start.

MENU AND INTERFACE  

Considering the looks and interface of the main and sub game-menu ,Konami has done a good job .The interface is very user friendly and is easy to work with. Instead of using their trademark menu interface ,ie the sideway going menu that we have seen in PES 12,PES 13
They have used a more traditional menu type that we can see in most of the games. I think this had made the use of the menus more simple and user-friendly. Konami also added two new features to the main-menu :

1) At the time we play the game for the first time ,we will be asked to select our favorite Team as usual. But we are also asked to select our favorite Player from that Team. Then the selected Player's different snapshots will be  displayed on the left side of the main-menu. I think this function is superb.

2) The second new feature is that, after we complete a game (against COM or a Human Player) with our favorite Team some game screenshots will be displayed on the right side of the main-menu .Isn't that cool.

So after considering the interface and the new features applied in the main-menu,I am giving a rating of 9.

GAMEPLAY

Now about the gameplay. Comparing to PES 13 I think the gameplay in PES 14 has weakened much. The passing,shooting,sprinting etc are not so sensitive while playing. Also the power bar for a shot or a pass is powering up so quickly that we cannot control our shot or pass properly. The power bar becomes full in the blink of an eye. Its quiet difficult to control it ,especially when using a low priced gamepads. But in PES 13 there was no problems with the power bar and it was easy to control a shot or a pass. Also the through balls are not so effective as they have been in PES 13.

Konami has also introduced new 'free kick controls' . Which I think is a completely bad idea. Usually we control the 'direction' of the kicks with the left stick and the power is controlled by the shoot button. But as per the new introduction in PES 14 , the power of the free kick is controlled by the 'left stick' and direction by the'right stick'. So what is the role of the shoot button? , Its just for kicking the ball away.Taking a penalty kick  is also a difficult task as the power bar is uncontrollable at times.

PES 14 has made new improvements in attacking and defensive play and they also added some videos of these new features within the game. I am not going deep into these , you can see this videos for yourself and enjoy them.

So I conclude that the gameplay is not upto the mark , So a rating of 6 for gameplay

GAMEPLAY - 6/10

GRAPHICS

Since the start , PES has been extremely good in their graphics. PES is much better than FIFA considering game graphics. Konami continues this tradition in PES 14 as its graphics is upto the expectations. Some of the player faces are so good that we cannot distinguish the original player and this player in the game. Look at Steven Gerrard and Buffon in the screenshot, They both look awesome.

Also PES 14 has new feature added to Player kits. The kits looks more realistic and also act realistic such as swaying in the wind  with player movement. The cloth of the kits are dynamic  and simulated  in such a way that  they act in a very realistic manner as  real world jerseys and kits. A big salute to Konami for adding this feature.

But faces of some well known players is so poor that these players cannot be recognised at all. Top class players like Lampard, Dzeko, Oscar,etc  have horrific graphic faces. In this aspect PES 13 has been better.

For graphics ,a rating of 8.

GRAPHICS - 8/10   

COMMENTARY

There is no difference in commentary in PES 14 and PES 13. The same commentators and almost the same comments as in PES 13 during the gameplay. Konami has done no effort to improve the quality and clarity of the commentary in PES 14. Comparing  the PES 14 commentary is nowhere near the quality of FIFA 14  commentary.So I give a rating of 5 for commentary.
